The 7 Most Common WhatsApp Scams

Knowing the scams is the first step to not falling for them. See the most used methods by criminals:

How It Works:

The scammer tries to register your number on another phone. WhatsApp sends the 6-digit code to YOU via SMS. The criminal then calls or messages you pretending to be from WhatsApp, a bank or company, asking for that code.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • NEVER share codes received via SMS
  • WhatsApp never asks for codes via message
  • Enable two-step verification (shown below)
Scammer Message Example:

"Hello! I'm from WhatsApp support. We detected suspicious activity on your account. To confirm your identity, please provide the 6-digit code you received via SMS."

How It Works:

With your cloned account or using your photo on another number, the scammer contacts your family saying they "changed their number" and urgently needs money.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Always call to confirm before transferring
  • Create a secret "code word" with family
  • Be suspicious of urgent money requests
  • Warn your family about this scam
Scammer Message Example:

"Hi Mom! I changed my number. Save this one. I need to make an urgent payment but my banking app is having issues. Can you send me $500? I'll pay you back tomorrow."

How It Works:

Messages promising prizes, discounts or gifts from famous brands. The link leads to fake pages that ask for personal data or install malware.

Warning Signs:

  • Shortened or suspicious links
  • "Too good to be true" promotions
  • Request to share with friends
  • Grammar or spelling errors

How It Works:

Job offers with high salaries and remote work. They ask for registration fees, paid mandatory courses or bank details to "register your salary".

How to Identify:

  • Legitimate companies never charge to hire
  • Be suspicious of salaries way above market
  • Research the company before sending data

How It Works:

Scammers pose as bank support, carriers or WhatsApp itself. They create urgency about account problems and ask for remote access or data.

Remember:

  • Banks don't call asking for passwords
  • WhatsApp doesn't have phone support
  • Never install "remote access" apps at others' request

How It Works:

Links sent by acquaintances (with hacked accounts) or groups. Clicking can install malware or redirect to phishing pages.

Safety Tips:

  • Check the URL before clicking
  • Be suspicious of links from groups
  • Keep your antivirus updated
  • Use link preview feature

How It Works:

Scammers convince victims to scan QR Codes that give access to WhatsApp Web. This allows them to read all conversations and send messages.

Protection:

  • Only scan QR Codes on your own computer
  • Check connected devices regularly
  • Disconnect suspicious sessions immediately

How WhatsApp Cloning Works

Understanding the technical process helps identify and prevent attacks. There are basically 3 methods used to clone WhatsApp:

1

Verification Code (SMS)

Easy to Execute

The criminal installs WhatsApp on another phone with your number. The app sends the verification code via SMS to YOUR phone. Through social engineering, the scammer convinces you to send that code.

2

SIM Swap (Cloned Chip)

Hard to Execute

Criminals bribe carrier employees or use fake documents to transfer your number to a new SIM. With your number, they receive all SMS, including verification codes.

This method is used in targeted attacks against specific people, usually high-profile.
3

WhatsApp Web (QR Code)

Medium

If someone has physical access to your phone for a few seconds, they can scan a QR Code and maintain an active WhatsApp Web session, reading all your messages in real time.

Tip: Go to WhatsApp → Settings → Linked devices and check if there are sessions you don't recognize.

The Ultimate Protection Guide

Follow this complete checklist to shield your account from attacks:

High Priority

Enable Two-Step Verification

This is the most important protection. Even if someone gets your SMS code, they'll also need your secret PIN.

Step by Step:

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap ⋮ (Menu) → Settings
  3. Go to Account → Two-step verification
  4. Tap Enable
  5. Create a 6-digit PIN (DON'T use obvious dates!)
  6. Add a recovery email
Important: Memorize the PIN! If you forget and lose email access, you'll have to wait 7 days to recover the account.
High Priority

Configure Profile Privacy

Limit who can see your personal information:

Profile photo My contacts
Last seen My contacts
Status My contacts
About My contacts
Groups My contacts

Path: Settings → Privacy

Medium Priority

Monitor Linked Devices

Regularly check for WhatsApp Web sessions you don't recognize:

  1. Open Settings → Linked devices
  2. Review the list of devices
  3. If you don't recognize one, tap it and select Log out
Do this check at least once a week.
Medium Priority

Enable Biometric Lock

Protect app access with your fingerprint or Face ID:

Path: Settings → Privacy → App lock

This prevents someone with physical access to your phone from opening WhatsApp.
